このツール「We Feel」は、英語の投稿の約10%にあたる毎分3万2000ツイートを分析することが可能で、愛情や喜び、驚き、怒り、悲しみ、恐れなどの感情に関連する600単語を解析している。
うつ病などの気分障害の診断や治療、予防を専門とする豪ブラックドッグ研究所(Black Dog Institute)の主任研究者、ヘレン・クリステンセン(Helen Christensen)氏は、「We Feel」のデータが世界各地の人々や地域社会の感情を監視するために使われ、「究極的には、命を救うためのサービスがいつどこで必要になるかの可能性を予測する」ものになるだろうと語る。
また「この情報の力を見くびってはならない。現状では、メンタルヘルス研究者や関連の公衆衛生プログラムは、5年以上も前の人口統計データを使用している」とも付け加えている。
月間アクティブユーザー数2億5500万人を上誇るとされるツイッター。その膨大なデータの分析は、オーストラリア連邦科学産業研究機構(Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation、CSIRO)と米インターネット小売大手アマゾン・ドットコム(Amazon.com)の協力の下で行われている。
